Hey Gang your old pal Happys got one of his Favourite Vincent Price movies for ya on this apocolyptic review. Made four years before Night of the Living Dead, The Last Man on Earth tells a very similar story. Based on Richard Matheson's novel "I Am Legend", the film tells the tale of a terrible plague that has wiped out all of mankind and replaced them with vampire-zombie like creatures. Well, it's almost wiped mankind out - one man, Vincent Price, still remains.
Now that he has inherited the Earth, the last surviving human has to hunt these creatures by day and then hole up in his house during the night. Vincent Price says most of dialogue in voice over, which gives this apocalyptic horror film a great element of pessimism, which is essential in order for the film to work. The way that Price reads his lines is done in such a way that it seems he has simply given up all hope, and this helps the tragic element of the movie, which is this film's main backbone. The dreary black and white cinematography helps this element of the film also, as it adds the degree of hopelessness and pessimism, which this story thrives on.
Quite how this film has reached the ripe old age of 47 and still not garnered the praise and respect it deserves is beyond me. While Night of the Living Dead deserves the praise for 'really' creating the zombie movie that we all now know and love, this film got the theme first, and thus deserves it's place in the annals of film history. The story, even without the horror of the zombie creatures, still makes for fascinating food for thought. The idea of being left all alone on the Earth is simultaneously fascinating and horrifying, and by showing us the things that the protagonist has to do every day to ward off the vampires (mirrors and garlic on the doors, hunting them by day), along with such quotes as "another day to live through" show the true horror of the idea behind the film.
Of course, Vincent Price is one of the greatest actors of all time and his presence in the movie is easily one of the highlights. Price's great screen presence helps to offset the obvious low budget of the film and even during the slower moments, The Last Man on Earth still ensures that we are interested in what's going on, just by the fact that Price is there. On the whole, this is an extraordinarily brilliant film and one that deserves your viewing! And just so you have no excuses because I know this movie is hard to find, I've added the entire movie below for your viewing pleasure........................cause I'm good like that!!
Hey all you Omega Maniacs, Ol Happywax has got a great flick for you tonight.This action packed and thought-provoking sci-fi drama has been one of my personal favorites for over 30 years. Charlton Heston found his definitive role here, as the last man on earth, a scientist fighting a single handed battle against hundreds of mutant creatures of the night.
"Yes Darth .. D .. A .. R .. T.. H.. ...... !"
Heston is at his best as a bloodless technocrat, a stone killer, "exterminating" mutants with machine guns, pistols, grenades, and his bare hands, all the time giving off an icy air of detachment. Put Chuck up against Clint Eastwood or Charles Bronson and he definitely holds his own purely as a Seventies action hero.
"I thought Ruffles where chips !!"
On the other hand, this is also Chuck's best performance as an actor. The fact that he literally has the screen to himself for the first half hour allows him to do things he never did in his "epic star" mode. Watch him buy that used car, making small talk with a rotted corpse. Chuck puts across so much loneliness and yet entirely avoids self-pity, as in "thanks a lot, you cheating bastard." It's a scream to watch the bigger than life Moses dealing with life's everyday hassles, not in reality but in wistful fantasy.
"I'm feeling a bit Grey Today !"
Then watch the WOODSTOCK scene in the movie theater. Here's right wing idealist Charlton Heston watching left-wing hippies dance and frolic. Here's the last man on earth watching huge mobs of people crowd up the world that is now empty. The ironies are razor sharp, and Heston just lies back and lets the dialog work for him. "Just to see, just to really realize, that if you have to be afraid to smile at someone, if you have to be afraid to walk down the street, what kind of world is that? Right?" Note well the master's restraint. He doesn't sneer, he puts much more sadness into the lip-reading bit, with a little self-loathing on the side. The dialog and situation are tailor-made for Heston's cold decisive vocal style. It's not hammy stuff, it's Heston giving you the same kind of chill Deniro achieved in TAXI DRIVER. It's the paranoid loner as tragic hero. This cold withdrawn stuff is right down his power alley, and Chuck sends this scene into the upper decks.
"NRA ! All The Way !!"
Once the movie gets started, Heston gets superb assistance from Anthony Zerbe as the religious fanatic Brother Matthias. Zerbe is superb and the commentary on religious fanaticism is even more relevant today than it was forty years ago. Then there's the sizzling racial subplot, the kill-whitey fanaticism of Brother Zachary striking far too close to home in 1973 but remaining as provocative as ever today. It's disturbing indeed to note the subliminal message of the inter-racial love affair -- the nice white man is happy to take care of the black woman and her children, but only after the assertive black man is dead. A movie that provokes, entertains, and combines scorching social issues with rip-roaring adventure, THE OMEGA MAN is Heston's best.
"Nope -- they sure don't make pictures like that any more."

Hey there all you Nosferatu Nerds !! Axemasters back with a gem from way back when Red leather jackets and shoulder pads Ruled !! ........... The Lost Boys !! This is one of my favorites from the era when even Grand parents were trying to "Moonwalk" !
Here's the story line in a nut shell .....................
"I Said DECAF !!!"
Open on a scene of the Beautiful California coast . A couple of our hero's are in the back of the family car , headed for Santa Carla .
Michael and Sam , are moving there with their Mom lucy . She and their dad just broke up and she's going back home to live with her dad ! On the way into town , Sam notices a bit of Graffiti that says , "Welcome to the murder capitol of the world " ! This freaks Sam out a bit , as he doesn't like scary stories . They get to their new home , and meet Grandpa . He's an eccentric old coot who grows pot on his window ledge (Ah California !) and likes to mess around with Taxidermy in his spare time ! There's more dead stuff around than the local grave yard !
Later that night , Michael and Sam go down to the boardwalk . There's rides and music and , for Michael , there's california babes ! As he and Sam are watching a band play (Particularly Hideous in a totally eighties kind of way !) , Michael sees a girl that takes his breath away !
"Fight Vamps for this ?? YES !!"
"Two Corys in eighties garb !"
He brushes Sam off and follows this babe through the crowds . While Michael is chasing "Bootie" , Sam wanders into a Comic store .(He's a real Comic nut Old Sam is !) This is where he meets up with The Frog Brothers . Edgar and Alan ! They give Sam a free comic about .... Vampires ..... and tell him to be on guard ! He thinks they're looney and takes off . He catches up with Michael again , just as the Babe he's been chasing all over climbs onto the back of a Motorbike , driven by an Eerie looking dude with blond hair (The Eighties ultimate bad guy , Kiefer Sutherland ) . Blondie rev's up the bike and Michael's chance melts into the night . But thats Okay , because this is California , where every night of the week is right for hanging out at the boardwalk !
The next night , Michael heads back to the Boardwalk on his own dirt bike ! (Take that Blondie !) He also buys a new leather jacket (Gotta look exceptional to win over these California girls !) , and is looking to get an earring ! (Seems a bit desperate doesn't he !) Suddenly , his dream girl appears at his side ! She tells him her name is Star . Michael thinks he's got it made and he and Star take off . But as they're getting onto his bike , up pulls old blondie and his gang . There's a tense stand off as , blondie , whom we now know as David , calls to Star . She oddly obeys him and climbs off of Michaels bike and onto Davids . David baits Michael and a chase along the dark beach ensues ! Michael stuggles to keep up to the bikes David and his gang are riding , but just as he pulls along side of Davids bike , he has to ditch as he realizes that David has him running full speed towards a cliff over looking the ocean !! Michael takes a shot at David . David laughs it off , and ask Michael " How far he's willing to go " ?
The gang take Michael back to their hang out . A ruined hotel that was destroyed by an earth quake .
"I'm Feeling a little Long in the tooth !"
They party for a bit , and get chinese food . Things get a bit surreal for Michael as it seems that david is messing with his head ! Hey Look your noodles are actually worms ! Now they're noodles again ! Hey You're eating maggots not rice ! Now Its rice again !! Hey how'd you do that !! Here ............ Drink this Michael ...........
.............. Its Blood ! Sure it is . Michael drinks it . The night spirals out of focus and he wakes up the next afternoon . He wakes up with an odd aversion to sun light !! He can stomach normal food either ! Sam has been reading the Horror comics given to him by the Frog brothers . He puts 2 and 2 together after Michael tries to attack him while he's having a bath !
Michael is turning into a Vampire !!!
Its up to Sam and the Frogs to save Michael and Star from becoming full fledged Blood Suckers !!

Hey all you Monster Maniacs, Happys got a Great movie lined up for you tonight, Everybody knows that cult movies can't be "made," they just have to "happen." Do you think that "Night of the Living Dead" (1968) or "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" (1975) became cult classics overnight? (Actually, they did.) "The Monster Squad," like nearly all cult movies, was dismissed by most critics and audiences upon its 1987 release.
The movie, a sort of cross-pollination between four distinct sources - "Ghostbusters," "The Goonies," "Stand by Me," and all the classic Universal Pictures monster movies - that combines these elements of such distant cult favorites and rolls them into its own creative universe. I loved watching this movie when I was a teenager.
"The Monster Squad" is purely nostalgia. What happens here, is that Count Dracula is in town, with a few days to kill. Apparently he wants to bring about the end of the world and he needs an ancient amulet to help him do it. So he calls upon the classic movie monsters (who have each been given a present-day update by special effects wizard Stan Winston may he RIP) - Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, the Mummy, and the Gillman - for further support in his devious plans.
To the rescue - who are you gonna call? - the Monster Squad, Dekker's teenage "monster-busters," if you will. Led by courageous young Sean (Andre Gower), and his friends and fellow monster hunters Patrick (Robby Kiger), "Fat Kid" Horace (Brent Chalem), Eugene (Michael Faustino) and Rudy (Ryan Lambert), they sharpen their stakes, round up silver bullets (using mom's fine dinner utensils), and make garlic necklaces and prepare for an epic showdown in town square. Sean also happens to be in possession of Dr. Abraham Van Helsing's diary, which holds the key to defeating Dracula, and he enlists help from the Scary German Guy (Leonard Cimino) who lives down the street to translate it so that they can save the world.
OK, so "The Monster Squad" is fairly cheesy, with many faithful nods to the monster movies of yesteryear and updating that material for a brain-dead '80s audience. Those not accustomed to the in-joke humor and references will probably look at this movie as cheesy '80s nostalgia. It is indeed nostalgia, but it's good nostalgia from an era that's still fresh, especially if you're still a kid at heart.
And of course, there are a lot of hokey performances (Tom Noonan's Frankenstein stands out here) and one-liners (that attempt to make the movie look cool and sometimes fail). You can dismiss that, if you wish. But if you can get past those very few short-comings, then "The Monster Squad" is one of the best experiences you'll never forget from your childhood.
