Now just a little history on Fan Expo:

Started in 1995 as Canadian National Comic Book Expo with a total of 5 guests at Roy Thompson Hall which could accommodate about 1500 people.  Since then, it has added the Canadian National Anime expo in 1998, and the Sci-Fi expo in 1999.  Rue Morgue sponsors the Festival of Fear aka The Horror Expo joined the crusade in 2004.  Now entering it's 17th year, Fan Expo Canada boasts over 700 exhibitors and sprawls over 40,000 square feet to accommodate over 75,000 fans!  Last year's attendance was almost 65,000 people which was the greatest turnout in the history of the Expo.

"Oh Brakes ! I thought you said Cakes !!"

 Howdy there all you Vicarious Vampire fans!  Ax and Hap are back in the dungeon tonight with a special bloodsucking review for you.......Priest!  It's not very often that Hap and Ax disagree on a movie rating, but this one took a bit of time.  In the end we were only just off by half a point on it.  Here's the story line in a nutshell.....

"I'm not shoveling Shit for anybody !!"

 The war that waged between vampires and humans is over, the humans have won because the Priests are super human warriors (the dumbasses destroyed the entire planet in the process turning it into a total wasteland).  So naturally after the war the Priests went to work as Waste treatment technicians and vending machine repairmen.  However the darkness has not yet past as on a lonely outpost on the edge of the wasteland a family of settlers is attacked by a very hungry horde of bloodsucking vermin.  The bloodsuckers kill the Mother, wound the Father and kidnap the Daughter taking her hostage (it's all part of their grand scheme to lure all of the Priests out of Priest Town)!  Black Hat who was once a Priest but has turned and is now the first Human Vampire created by the Queen, is amassing an army in secret. Taking them via train through all of the small outposts in the wastelands killing all in their wake.  Enter Priest, he's been doing odd jobs because nobody would hire him on and it just so happens that it was his family that were attacked, and his niece that was kidnapped.  Naturally, he's pissed!  He goes before the high council of Clergy to ask permission to have his position reinstated in the service of the Priesthood to serve up some asskicking awesomeness.  After being shot down by Monsignor Plummer he decides to decides to risk ex-communication from the order to take on the bloodsuckers singlehandedly.  He's is joined in his battle by Hicks (who is secretly in love with his niece, and who is a Sheriff in a small outpost town).

"Go Ahead ...., Do Feel Lucky Punk !"

 Director Scott Charles Stewart captures a certain dark mood with Priest as the cinematography and scenes from the wasteland are quite realistic and surreal (everything from desert vistas to strange jagged terrain and ruins of modern cities).  The action sequences and fight scenes are plentiful and there is a Mad Maxesque feeling to the film.  Also thrown in is a pinch of Spaghetti Western, Sci-Fi giving Priest it's own unique feel.  The CGI Vampires were an acquired taste, this is however based on a graphic novel so it's expected that it would be over the top.  Perhaps this is where the film struggles to bring the awesomeness of a graphic novel to life on screen, many movies have tried yet only a few have succeeded.  All in all Priest was an entertaining ride so long as you can get past the over the top fight scenes, and the less than stellar over CGI'd vampires then you've got a pretty good movie.  Definitely worth the Tuesday price of admission.

Hey all you Re-Animator Maniacs, Happys in the dungeon tonight and I'm bringing the 3rd installment of the reanimator series,Stuart Gordon's satirical Horror masterpiece "Re-Animator" of 1985 is a personal favorite of mine, and Brian Yuzna's 1990 sequel "Bride Of Re-Animator" was a sequel as gory, hilarious and great as one could possibly hope. While Yuzna's second sequel, "Beyond Re-Animator" does, in my opinion, not quite reach the quality of its predecessor, it is nonetheless a gory, funny and outrageously entertaining film that no Horror fan should miss. Our favorite obsessed scientist Dr. Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) has been serving the last thirteen years in prison, which is ruled by a mean and sadistic warden (Simón Andreu). West has since been working in the prison's medical station, and secretly experiments on rats. The young Dr. Howard Phillips (Jason Barry)then begins to work as the prison doctor, and he shows great interest in West's work... Once again the film is full of extreme gore and macabre humor. Jeffrey Combs is once again great as Dr. West. The guy is a great actor, and he has played many other memorable roles, but Herbert West was the role he was born to play. Someone other than Combs to play the role is simply not imaginable. Jason Barry is also good as the young doctor (basically a replacement for Dan Caine played by Bruce Abbott). David Gale (who died in 1991) is severely missed as the evil Dr. Carl Hill, but Simón Andreu is a very good replacement as the scumbag character. The stunningly beautiful Elsa Pataky is very welcome as the new female character, the sexy and ambitious journalist Laura. The prison setting is, in my opinion, not quite as cool as the settings in the predecessors (simply because it is more limited), but they made the best out of it. While sequels to masterpieces often tend to disappoint, the opposite is the case with the "Re-Animator" sequels, probably because they kept the style and humor of the original. The great score, the gore, the humor, and, above all, the wonderfully obsessed Dr. West , God bless him  lol. Oh ya did I mention that there's a fight scene with a rat and a severed weiner that is not to be missed...   anyways as always make sure you check out the trailer below.

Phantasm 4 Oblivion (1998)

Ok all you Phan Phans , Happys here once again and with me i bring the final review for what I think is the greatest horror series ever made.What makes this series so consistent and awsome is the fact that the same writer/director, Don Coscarelli, is responsible for all four entries. Some phans prefer the second film for its tendency to lean more toward being an action film, while others like the cartoonish, over-the-top aspects of the third entry. Personally, I think this one (IV) is the best sequel. I love the fact that it is more in the moody, psychological vein of the original, which is by far the best in the series in my opinion. IV uses some beautiful locations- a rocky beach, a desert with intricate rock formations, and a completely unpopulated downtown Los Angeles (I'm assuming that's what city it is). These serve as really interesting backdrops for Mike, Reggie, Jody and the Tall Man (all the original actors returned, too). All this is beautifully shot by D.P. Chris Chomyn, who did a great job. The plot is not completely clear, but also not complex. The Tall Man is after Mike with the intent to turn him into another "Tall Man" sort-of undertaker. Meanwhile there's a subplot where Reggie encounters a beautiful female on the road (as he does in both other sequels). The dialogue is sparse and much of the meaning is implied. One of the most impressive things about the film is the way they were able to incorporate so much unused footage from the original (19 years earlier) into the story. Despite the time difference, the new film and the old footage work together perfectly, and that is a really cool thing to behold. The film actually ends with a flashback- a poignant and subtle scene that is unlike the endings of the other three movies, leaving the series with what could be a perfect close. But if Coscarelli and Co. want to come back and do another one, what Phantasm phan is gonna dispute it?! Not me!

Phantasm 3 Lord of the Dead (1994)

 Hey all you fellow Phan Phans Happys back in the dungeon today ( I've never been in here during the day, this place is a mess) with the third installment of the awsome Phantasm series. When we last saw Mike and Reggie the Tall Man had cornered them on a lonely highway and seemed to have gained the upper hand. For some reason, he's interested in kidnapping Mike for his own evil purposes. Reg threatens to blow them all up unless the Tall Man backs offs. He agrees, but threatens to strike again in the near future.

Badly concussed, Mike falls into a coma where he has a vision of his dead brother Jody telling him that he must choose to live in order for the cryptic game plan of the Tall Man's to work out. At that moment Mike wakes to find a demonic nurse about to drill a hole in his head and sentinel sphere buzzing around in the hospital. Reg intrudes on the scene saves him, but not without getting a mouthful of puss, and they hide out in his desert base where they can come up with a plan before the Tall Man's next strike.

But before you can say 'boooooooooooy!!!' he's back and spirits Mike away to another dimension, leaving Reg knocked out on the floor. Not knowing where he is or what happened Reg takes off across country with the burned-out sphere from the hospital as his only clue. It appears that the Tall Man has harvested the dead from dozens of towns across the Pacific Northwest, leaving entire counties to crumble. He teams up with a resourceful kid and an ex-army chick to find Mike and continue his hunt for the Tall Man while dwarfs, sentinel spheres, gravediggers and zombies are all on their trail.

The following hokum will seem very familiar as it's almost exactly what happened in Phantasm II, so while it's certainly not original in this respect I still found it to be loads of fun as the pace just doesn't let up and new characters and locations keep popping up to keep things interesting. Don Coscarelli answers some questions we've been literally dying to ask but there seems to be a conspiracy going on and the Tall Man is keeping his mouth shut. We know there's more story developing that what is obvious but good luck trying to figure it out.

The mystical, foreboding nature of Phantasm is a bit stronger here than it was in the first sequel. Unfortunately, so is the humor. The distinct lack of anything funny is what gave the original film such a weird edge and the series' increasing tendency to be an Evil Dead gorefest isn't entirely appropriate. The gore is gruesome and plentiful but not exactly chilling. I don't feel that Don Coscarelli has found the perfect mix of action, sci-fi and horror with this film to best suit the series, but it is entertaining. It seems like he's pushing his luck just a little bit in trying to cram out another film without developing too many ideas. Unimaginative is certainly not a word you could use to describe the Phantasm franchise, but this film does seem like a lot of recycled scenarios from Phantasm 2.

On the plus side, A. Michael Baldwin (the original actor) returns as Mike as well as Jodie so we now have the entire original cast back. Reg is just plain brilliant and while he may not be up to the wacky standards of Ash he's still a hoot to watch and seems to balance the serious and the jokes very well. But, as always, Angus Scrimm scores the most points as the Tall Man. He's cool, he's evil and his mysterious nature makes him all the more scarier.

Unforgiving horror fans may not like it very much as it does kind of follow the typical path of other horror franchises but there's still enough energy and weirdness to keep Phantasm phans happy and it does move very fast.Oh and did i mention the 4 barreled shot gun is back in all its demon midget blasting glory.  Dont forget to check out the trailer below, or the tall mans gonna getch ya.

Duel (1971)

  Hey there all you Highway Hellions !! Axemasters in the dungeon on this rainy night with another Classic of yesterday ..... Duel !!
Its a good thing that this flicks tittle rhymes with Cool , because that's exactly what it is ! Here's the story line in a nut shell ................

   Mild mannered sales man David Mann , is on a road trip to meet an important client . He hops in the old reliable Plymouth Valiant ( I had one of these growing up !! Yes , I'm an old bastard !! ) and heads off on the sunny back roads of southern California . The talk radio is on and Old Dave is having a great time , talking right along with them ! (come on admit it you do it too !) Everything is going fine until he comes up behind a creepy , dirty , stinky old transport truck . This thing looks like Satan himself could be hauling freight on his off days !!

"Satan's trucking ! How May We Help You !?"

  Now , being as he's in a bit of a rush , Old Dave , well he kind of gets a bit close to this rolling death trap , and after inhaling a few lungs full of diesel exhaust , he passes the truck ......... on a solid line ! (Dun Da Da Dun !! ) He keeps right on rolling along . However , old Truck Boy has taken offense to this slight ! This Insult of the High Highway !! How dare he pass ON THE SOLID !!! After all ....... Truck Boy is ... The King Of The Road ! (By No Means !)

"Ten and Two Dam It Ten And Two !!"

  So , as old Dave is rolling along , the Stinky Semi Screams past him and cuts him off !! (Son Of A ..... !!!!) Then slows right down in front of the good old Valiant Again ! Now David says something like "Gee willikers Buddy !" and well , he does what any red blooded north American male would do !! He puts the hammer down (in this case the old valiant is a bit of a dog !) and blasts past that old whore of a truck for a second time ! This earns him a blast from Truck Boys air horn , but he just keeps right on driving , thinking the worst is now behind him . So , he drives about a mile or two , and promptly ...... Stops for gas !! ( two guesses who stops with him !! Duh !) As he's having the old pump jockey see to the trusty Valiant , in pulls the ozone crushing rig ! In a tense scene , Dave , still in his car , sees the truck pull up , and eyes the cab a bit apprehensively . But truck Boy is just sitting in there ..... waiting . All Dave can see is a gnarled hand holding the giant wheel ! (creepy sort of hand too ! ) Well , Dave looks away for a minute , and he hears the trucks door slam ! We see the cowboy boot clad feet (Gee A trucker with cowboy boots !? NO !!) of Truck Boy walking on the other side of the rig . The pump Jockey distracts Dave again , and when he looks back , truck Boy is nowhere to be seen . So Dave goes into the gas station to use the phone . He calls his wife , and in a bit of an exchange , we learn that , said wife is pissed at old Dave because they were at a party , and one of Dave's co-workers came on to her in a big way ! Seems that dave is .... well a bit mild ! He has trouble with confrontation !! (Uh Oh ! sorry for your luck Dave !!) Anyway , after promising his wife he'll be home for dinner (Double Uh Oh !) Dave hits the road again ! And this is where the Shit hits the fan !! The Truck comes barreling up from behind , and the gloves come off !! No more Mr. Nice Guy ! The Duel .... Begins !

"Can't we just play Badminton !? Best 2 out of 3 !?"

    Will Dave learn to be a man and kick some ass !?? Will Truck Boy Turn old dave into a skid mark on the side of the highway ! I'll Never Tell !! You'll have to watch it and find out !!
  Duel is a great old flick , and one that I never saw until recently ! (Thanks Gore Girl !!) It is the debut of Steven Spielberg as director , and you can tell . It has the feel of his work all over it . Now this was a TV film , believe it or not , so there is no gore or foul language . Spielberg uses tension throughout the movie to keep you on the edge of your seat , spilling popcorn everywhere !! The flick has a Hitchcock like feel to it as well . Probably because the screenplay was written by Richard Matheson , who worked on Hitchcocks show , and the Twilight Zone , and much much more . Dennis Weaver does a great job as the nerdy salesman turned road warrior .
  So pick up a copy and rev it up ! You'll get a crazy ride , thats for sure !

         And Remember Fright Fans ..................

                 If you find yourself  on a lonely road , with a dirty old truck smoking away in front of you .....

Diary of the Dead

"You made me pay to see this shit !!? Dam YOU !!!"

Hey all you zombie lovin gore geeks, Happys in the dungeon again. Now usually I lock myself in and turn out the lights to make it abit scarier, but after watching this flick, I figured I should leave it open just incase I got the urge to stick my head in the doorway and slam it on my face repeatidly after suffering throu this movie.   First of all: I'm a huge fan of Romero's first three classic Dead movies, and have great respect and admiration for his work and the influence he and his movies have had on the entire horror movie genre. Along with Lucio Fulci and Dario Argento, Romero is without any doubt one of the most influential and important horror/splatter/zombie directors of all time. No question about it!

In Diary, Romero once again focuses on a few surviving people and the relationships between them, rather than the zombies and the gore. This is what has always made his movies great and powerful. In all his films, the zombies themselves work mostly as a reason to explain why a small group of very different people is suddenly forced to rely on, and help each other out, while the main focus is on the relationships between these people and the reactions and emotions that might erupt during such an extreme and interesting situation as a zombie outbreak.

While this formula is what has made his previous films interesting and entertaining, it is sadly what makes Diary of the Dead the exact opposite. And the reason for that are simply the actors. The main characters are all (except one) film school students, being just as shallow and cocky as every other cast of kids in any other "new" horror movie. The actors (all being young and unknown) seem quite inexperienced, and they all fail miserably to convince me, even for a second, that this is anything other than a bad student movie, trying desperately to be something more than it really is. And when ONE single interesting character (the mute Amish man armed with a scythe) is finally introduced, he sure doesn't stick around for very long.

A movie like this depends heavily on the actors, and when you seriously wish the entire cast would turn into zombies, just so they can shut up, the entire film, including the once great director, has failed.

The script itself, on the other hand, is actually quite good, its just to bad it was shot from a POV perspective, sorry George your my Hero but this movie  really is a stinker. Now like my best buddy Axe always says its tough to give bad reviews on some movies especially one of George Romeros, but, sometimes you gotta do it, and hounestly this movie really does suck.

Hey all you silver sphere lovin freaks, Happys back in the dungeon tonight after a week long hiatus and tonight i'm bringing you another chapter of the under rated but seriously awsome Phantasm series,Phantasm II, with its robed, evil midgets and flying mini-saw wielding spheres, is a film that delivers the goods. We've got a chainsaw dual, cool characters in the Reg-man, Mike, and the Tall Man, and a hell of a lot of action!! Right from the opening title when you hear the atmospheric theme (which is amazing by the way), the tone is set and you know you're in for something special.

"Mom always said , don't chew with your mouth open !"

With the help of some dark and fantastical imagery, the story is laid out. Mike and Reggie are hunting down the Tall Man, a mysterious undertaker from another world who plunders graveyards and carts the dead off to be crushed into evil slave midgets. The movie strikes a chord with some of its imagery, especially those of embalming. What better way to be reminded of your mortality than to see a cadaver having his mouth sewn shut, and later another being drained of his blood and pumped with chemicals? Perhaps the Tall Man sums it up best when he says, "You think when you die you go to heaven? You come to US!!" It may make you uncomfortable to think about such things, but that is the point, at least partially.

"Why is mine so small compared to his !!??"

Don't get up to get a drink or a snack on this one either. The movie has such a quick pace, you'll be left behind and might miss one of the many memorable scenes: Reggie and Mike walking through an empty graveyard, Father Meyer's encounter with a sphere, the quad-barreled shotgun, or the aforementioned chainsaw dual!!

All in all, Phantasm II is a film that surpasses its predecessor (itself a classic) and takes you on a 90-minute roller-coaster ride. It's fun, action-packed, and above all, highly entertaining.

           Howdy Hell Hounds !! Axemaster , reporting live from the dungeon this evening with another blast from the past ! The Prey !! Ooooo !! Sounds scary right !?? Sounds like it could make your eyeballs bleed and you tonsils tear from screaming with fright ! Right !??? Well ........

"Good lord this script is Killing Me !"

guess again Fright Fans ! As I've said in the past , Sometimes , being a reviewer of Horror films can be , well ...... Horrible !! Now let me explain that my best old pal Hap and I , watched this flick again recently for purely nostalgic reasons ! Way back in 1984 , when we were 13 or 14 years of age , we attended a birthday party for a good pal of ours . We watched flicks on "First Choice Super Channel " (yes we're really that old folks !! And the converter for the tv that night was .... The BROWN BOX !! I'll let you youngins figure that one out for yourselves !)  At about Midnight we (all four of us ) had consumed about a case of soda each !! And were completely wired !! (My flavor that night was Dr. Pepper ....... 24 cans worth ! I haven't had one in 27 years folks !) Wired enough to decide to stay up till four am and watch ... Yup , you guessed it ..... The Prey !! Well .... even then ..... we knew it was .....a Stinker ! Here's the story line in a nut shell .........
  
       The flick opens with a scene from 1948 . There's this fire raging and consuming the side of a mountain . People (that are nowhere to be seen on screen !) are screaming . (probably because they know how bad the movie is !) Then , flash forward to the present (in this case 1984 !) and a middle aged couple camping , on the very same mountain side . There is a noticeable lack of dialog , as you see these to eat , chew , swallow , and eat some more ! Then there's the wild life scenes ! Yeah like a caterpillar eating a leaf you know ? Or a spider grabbing an unsuspecting fly !! (No I'm not kidding !) These Marlin
Perkins moments are all through this flick ! Weird ! Anyway , finally , Gertrude says to Hubby ........"I'm going down to the lake "........... !!! Wow they speak ! Naturally , we see from the point of view of someone , .. or Something ... Lurking in the woods , the camp fire of these two innocent granola lovers ! (every time they show this "Lurkers " view , there is the sound of a heart beat !! Yes ... Cheese !!) Well old Gertrude makes it to the lake , hears Hubby let off a blood curdling scream and double times it back to camp ! Just in time to see the decapitated body of Hubby , before she herself ,

"Watching the prey did this to me !! Law Suit !!"

meets an untimely , axe filled end ! Ooooo !! Bbuurrrr !!
   Cut to the scene where , six young hippie looking kids pull up in an old van (Yawn !) . They are going Camping ! (No !! Really !?) And guess which part of the mountain they're heading to !!? Uh Huh ! The bad side !
Anyway , more wildlife shots ensue as they hike into he woods . As our hapless gang of nature lovers hike in , the local Ranger service gets the missing persons report for Gertrude and Hubby . The old Ranger tells the young Ranger , to go check out the situation . He also tells him of having fought a forest fire in the area where Gert and Hub disappeared . He mentions that a band of gypsies (no connection to Jimi Hendrix I'm sure !) lived up there and got burned alive !! Bodies everywhere !! Worst fire , he ever seen !! He also mentions that on the only occasion he ever went there again , he thought he saw ,.............. A BOY !! ( Oh my God really !!! ???) 
Hiding in the woods ....... watching him ! I know ... Terrifying isn't it .
